“I simply don’t have a natural sense of style. “Is that something you’ve heard before?
This is the reality. It takes expertise to dress nicely. You can learn it and get better at it, just like any other skills.
As a reader of Grooming Skool, you actually have a significant advantage. Before I really understood what great style was, I had to go through years of trial and error without any genuine resources.
I’m going to share some vital style ideas with you today for men who wish to dress better.
These ideas and tips were developed by me to get you looking as glowed up as possible in the least amount of time, whether you’re a complete noob or someone who has been working on their style for awhile but could use some brushing up.
In fact, for most guys getting better you’ve been doing it all wrong by adding MORE clothes—the best way to look (and perform) is to start subtracting.
What I mean is this:
Like most men, you most likely own a large collection of clothing that you rarely wear.
Most likely, there are several items in your closet that don’t fit properly. You wear it, but it’s not helping you, or you don’t wear it at all.
Your clothes are probably over colored and patterned. Wondering how the heck would you mix your different stuff together.
Plus even the best parents likely missed this opportunity since they probably never have been taught how to dress themselves!
Do not feel worried. So, today I want to go over 11 easy style tips anyone can do at this very moment in order to start dressing better.
Fit is the most important thing in style. Because the best style intentions in the world can get foiled by a poorly fitted garment — no matter how expensive or on-trend it might be.
A fit doesn’t mean your clothes have to be tight and restricting; it just means that the clothing matches up with you, accentuating your best aspects without being uncomfortable.
If you’re an athletic build, your shoulders are broad and waist is narrow–basically everything fits right everywhere except the seat of pants (and sometimes legs). Wear clothing that is fitted and highlights the natural “V” shape.
Shirts: T-shirts should be form-fitting, fitted around the waist area but loose with a bit of breathable room. Stay away from overly baggy shirts which is the worst that you can wear – it will literally hide your body shape.
Blazers and Jackets – Choose pieces with constructed shoulders that pinch in at the waist, as they are sure to flatter your form.
Athletic frames: go for sleeker, shorter jackets that stop just below the hip.
Pants: Stick with slim or straight-leg pants to show off toned legs without extra bulk. In the modern world, stretch fabrics can be a good ally for those who still have an athletic figure.
Tall & Thin Avoid clothes that will elongate your body. ~The more you wear, the bigger and heavier they should get in order to balance proportion.
Shirts — Regular or Slim-fit shirts, ones that follow your contours up top. Do not go extreme with either slim-fit or baggy that simply emphasize height/thinness.
Blazers and Jackets – Double Breasted jackets or layered tops can add structure to your frame … For extra balance, you can wear slightly longer jackets to minimize the look of your length.
A great option is straight-leg or a little looser tapered variation to elongate your lower half. Avoid skinny jeans, that make you look taller and longer.
In broader or more muscular shapes, you should not add unnecessary volume and want to draw lines that would be represented with a straight silhouette.
Shirts - Go for tailored fits, not slim-fit — which may feel too restrictive. Find Where It Fits: Chest and shoulders without being too loose around the waist.
Jackets: choose single-breasted blazers that have a subtle taper to the waist without being oversized. If you can, go for styles with structured shoulders and a very basic fit.
Straight-leg pants are generally the best cut for muscular thighs, loose enough to comfortably move in without being overly baggy (or super tight!).
Wear slightly tapered pants at the ankle to lengthen your frame if you are on the heavy side
Plain t-shirts, well-fitted jeans and a good all around jacket are the building blocks of most outfits. Money spent buying more expensive pieces is quite often money well spent as they generally have a longer life and age better.
Yes, quality basics are going to be a bit more expensive up front, but in the end they will hold up longer and keep their shape & color looking polished after many wears/washes.
To help guide your shopping, here are a few staple basics:
A trusty basic that will get you far – the simple t-shirt. A t-shirt well-made should withstand the pressures of daily wear, the washings and dryings — while still being plush in feel to smooth fabric against skin.
No closet is complete without a truly reliable pair of jeans, the cornerstone for anything from your laziest day outfit to those you-scrub-up-rather-well ones. Ready-made clothes look nice, but it is not always perfect since clothing can still be adapted to the intended customer. A couple of small, custom adjustments can go a long way in providing that tailor-fit end result.
It is all about the tailoring, great styling can make even a very basic or budget piece appear as something more bespoke and made for you.
Layering is not just a way to keep warm; It is a kind of fashion art that lends character, dimension, and texture to any outfit. Thanks to four seasons with their own weather-related dilemmas (scorching heat in summer, frigid temperatures in winter), perfecting layering techniques could mean the difference between adjustment or unwanted adjustments and looking control-like.
1. A basic tee or button down: The perfect foundation shirt is something simple and comfortable like a T-shirt, from H&M that easily can be found at the hedge (short for mall!!). Wear them by themselves if the weather heats up.
Throw on a Light Sweater or Hoodie — A thin sweater or light hoodie warms you up without adding too much bulk. Choose fabric like cotton or lightweight wools to keep it breathable
Add a Chilled Jacket: From denim to bomber or utility jacket, the third piece is quick and easy off. And also the structure of these jackets make an outfit more stylish, and they are not that heavy.
Play with Colors: There’s nothing like spring to experiment a little more on color, go for pastel and lighter versions in one of your seasonal outfits.
Go for light base layers: Begin with a breathable material such as linen or cotton when it comes to your t-shirt and tank top. It might be the fabrics that keep you cooler and more comfortable.
LAYER UP WITHOUT TIGHT CLOTHING: A slim T-shirt under light, breathable unbuttoned shirts like linen or chambray can make you seem totally put together without actually losing your shit from the sweat. The ideal casual summer suit for everyday use or as a cover-up for the beach.
Lightweight Outerwear Whether it be a linen blazer, canvas short-sleeve shirt or summery lightweight vest, well-dressed men know that this style of garment is their secret weapon to looking sharp without overheating.
Choose the Lighter Color: Colors that are light in tone reflect less heat if compared to darker colors, so stick with beige color or white or pastel colored outfit for a super comfy look during summers.
Begin Using a Thin Sweater or Long Sleeve: These are great autumn tops for layering with basic merino wool sweaters, cotton long sleeves and flannels. They’re warm without the bulk, so they work well as a warmer layer under your bulky ones.
Alternatively, Grab Yourself a Mid Layer — A cardigan or hoodie can help add warmth and texture without being too difficult. Go for knits, fleece or heavier cottons- because this will also give it a little substance.
Also a great fall outer layer: A leather jacket, trench coat or wool-blend tailored coverup. These add warmth, and they make even a casual outfit look more like something you’re wearing as opposed to just tossing on.
Pattern and Color: Get crazy with patterns — earth tones such as olive, burned orange, mustard & yellows are beautiful for the fall.
Choosing a thermal or base layer most important when wearing layers is to stay warm without looking bulky. Start with a staple piece of your wardrobe, it could be something like just Tee as long as it offers warmth.
Heavy Jacket: A wool overcoat, parka or puffer jacket offers vital protection from the cold. If you live in an especially brutal winter area, choose one that has some windproofing and water resistance.
Add Layers for Inner Warmth: Wear scarves, gloves and hats if you want to wear it in a fashionable way.
A watch is not just a timepiece; it’s an accessory that makes the statement personal and also gives any outfit style. Doesn’t matter if you are going to a gala, the office or simply for brunch in your casual vibes.
A watch is probably one of those accessories that can enrich this look and make it complete.
Different colors can look really different on you depending upon how light or dark your skin tone is. Skin tones are generally grouped into warm, cool and neutral, all of which have a distinctive set of colors that look flattering on them.
Chances are that if you have yellow, peach or golden roots to your skin coloring then it’s the warm category for you. If you have a warmer skin tone, opt for colors that will pick up and enhance your natural glow.
Best Colors: Browns, camels and oranges as well as warm reds are stunning colors for people with a warm skin tone. The emerald green and deep orange jewel tones work well too!
Warm tones should be avoided: Few exceptions are warm colors, which can sometimes make cool skin tones look colorless but icy blues or bright purples might not complement/warm up these color skins.
Cool skin tones fill in pink or blue undertones. Like with like will work well, and be soft.
Best Colors: Cool tones like navy, charcoal gray, emerald green, lavender or pure whites accentuate cool undertones. You can even use bolder colors like teal and fuchsia.
Earth tones that are too warm, such as beige and brown, can occasionally not work well with cool skin,( yellow or orange undertones).
Warm and cool undertones: If you have a combination of warm-and-cool skin tone, chances are that every color looks good on you. If you have a neutral skin color then you can wear almost any type of clothing.
Best Colors: With neutral skin, you can work with both warm and cold colors so the choice is immense. This works amazingly well with neutral colors: gray, beige, olive and the likes or bright happy playful ones.
Bright neon colors: While you are less limited, extremely bright neon colors may be quite overwhelming for neutral skin tones.
Ever have an outfit that looks too plain and simple? Patterns such as stripes, plaids, checks or something subtle adds character to your attire.
For someone new to patterns, wearing one patterned item is a good start. Particularly a striped shirt or plaid jacket, or even just subtly patterned socks. Starting with one statement piece will keep you from overdoing it and allow for a point of focus.
However if you learn what the most common patterns are and how they wear with other pieces it can make choosing new additions a lot easier.
Introducing more of your favorite kind of patterns like Stripes, one of the simplest ones to work with owing to their multiple functions as well other than existing in every size and direction.
Plaids, and checks are both classic designs that buttons up structured calm down your khakis a Casual Friday kind of feel.
Another way to play with patterns is also on Outerwear. A perfect way to add some pattern into your outfit, since it’s worn over more solid or subdued base layers. Coats, jackets and blazers with patterns add an audacious twist to your outfit without having the risk of clashing colors.
Because feeling good isn’t just about the clothing it’s how you feel inside them. Just wearing clothes with confidence turns any outfit into one that is more of an expression and statement.
It can take some time to build that confidence in yourself, but ultimately doing so empowers you from the very core and in addition to being recognized around campfires for your outstanding sense of style.
