The bottom line is, the color can play a real part in how you come across not only for work but also on that casual day or night out.
Now, before we get into the categorized colors let us just understand the difference between skin tone and undertone.
Skin tone — this should be the color of your skin that you see on top and is usually called fair, light, medium, tan or dark. It is what you usually refer to when describing the color of your skin.
Undertone: This is the color that comes through in your skin and can have a huge effect on what colors you suit. There are three primary undertone types:
Cool Undertones: They lean toward blue, pink or red.
Warm Undertones: The undertones tend to hint at yellow, peach or gold.
Neutral Undertones: A perfect mix of cool and warm hues creating a balanced undertone.
Undertone is everything as it plays a major role in determining what color will work wonders on you and which one makes your skin fall flat.
Working out your undertone makes picking clothes out so much easier!
The good news is that figuring out your undertone can be a pretty short process. To get tested at home, try these simple tests:
Vein Test: Examine the veins on your wrist in natural light If they are more blue or purple you probably have cool undertones.
If they appear more greenish, this is likely cool-toned also.
If you find it hard to tell if blue or green looks best on your skin, then you could have neutral undertones.
The Jewelry Test: Do you wear silver jewelry better or gold? People with cool undertones look better in silver, and those warmer tones lean toward gold. Both metals work well with neutral undertones.
The White Tee Test: Place a pure white tee or paper next to your face. If your skin looks yellow or golden when placed next to a white piece of fabric, you have warm undertones.
If you see a pink or rosy color in the mirror, your undertones are cool. A mix = Neutral Undertones.
If you know that your undertones are warm, then you will want colors with a warm base.
Imagine sky, water and winter nature colors. These tones will bring out notes in your skin like pinks, reds or blues.
Blues: Blues with cool undertones = great in navy, cobalt or even icy blue. These tones help bring out the cool undertones in your skin and are well paired with almost any outfit, from denim to suits.
Purples: Lavender, plum and violet shades of purple — all the manner from barely-there spring to deep wintry weather color—Bring a touch of royalty to your dresser. They complement your cool undertones, and they are also extremely sharp in a shirt or an accessory.
Cool greens: (such as emerald, jade and mint) these colors will enhance the vibrancy of skin.
Reds: If you decide to do a red, remember cherry-red or crimson or even cooler burgundy. Warm reds are more vibrant and pop on those with cool undertones.
Gray: A nice cool gray or charcoal would be perfect and a color that can go with just about anything else you have in your wardrobe being it blazers to casual tees.
White: A white that reads very cool, but not blue can work here — just make sure it’s crisp so you don’t get the “dentist” effect and skew really modern.
Black: Timeless black is an easy option which works well with cooler undertones. It is a wise option in both formal s and casual looks.
Avoid warm colors like mustard, orange, and most yellows, as they can clash with the cool tones in your skin.
If you have warm undertones you are in luck, because earthy and sun inspired tones make most of our warmer complexions look radiant.
Imagine a season that is warm in its color; reminiscent of those autumn weeks, the bright daylight and vibrant fauna.
Yellows: Whether it’s mustard, or honeyed right through to a golden yellow adds an immense natural glow on warmer undertones.
Oranges: Shades such as burnt orange, coral and peach bring out warm undertones. If you have a warm skin tone, the following colors make your face look healthy and full of life.
Earth Browns: rich earthy browns such as caramel, tan or chocolate are grounding and mirror the warm undertones in your skin.
Greens – Olive is the next green to try with warm-toned skin, followed by moss and then forest greens are also offered.
Creams and Off-Whites: Whites that have a hint of warmth are much more flattering than pure white which can look stark against warm skin.
Beige is great for warm undertones, ranging from sand to camel that makes beige tones look subtle yet polished.
Warm Gray: A soft and slightly warm gray, perfect for your daily look.
Stay away in general from Icy or cool colors like blue based pink, icy blues or bright purples – These typically wash you out.
If your skin is neutral (lucky you), then that means just about any color dress will look good on you.
If you have more neutral tones, like wood or white, then you obviously will be able to mix colors from each side of the color wheel without there being a problem.
Neutrals that looks beautiful & glowing in all tones (or so I think)
Greens and Blues — Soft shades that are reminiscent of the sea, such as colors like Seafoam, Teal & Turquoise all look wonderful with neutral undertones; Softer blues do well too! (dusty blue or a muted teal)
Peach and Blush: neutral tones glow naturally in soft peaches, as well as blush. Matte Neutral Warm Tones: Ideal to warm up the skin.
Sage green, taupe, and mocha work well for earthy tones because these hues have a grounding effect that complements those warm undertones.
Off-Whites: Like eggshell, off-whites are slightly warmer white (ivory or cream) that pair well with neutral undertone.
Gray: Medium grays read sophisticated and pair well with neutral undertones.
Dark Neutrals (i.e. Charcoal or Navy): Perfect for a more formal environment.
Avoid a wide range of what you can wear but extreme colors (really cool or really warm) may feel overpowering.
Since I am testing some new colorways, you will probably see these colors used on small items before a large item in this case as well.
How To Test-Drive a Color, Implement as an accessory Before Swinging for the Fences; Rather than purchasing an entirely new-colored shirt or sweater, dive into a scarf, hat or tie. Then you can hold it up to your face and get an idea for how the color appears without taking a full plunge.
Layer the color: Toss a cardigan, blazer or jacket of your new bright color over a neutral top. This will allow for it to match your look.
Different Lighting: Colors can appear dramatically different in sunlight than they do under LED lighting.
Always make the decision to see the color in natural daylight, indoor lighting and even in photos to see how it really looks on you.
Even if you find developing your skin tone and undertone luscious, fashion is about expressing yourself. You should be guided by rules, not boxed in, and for your choices to also carry a piece of your personal style.
Experimenting with colors or bold styles outside your typical range can be a rewarding means to determine what you wish to wear.
So, if you have a warm undertone and love red – think about what shades of rust or coral are more toward the earthy side which could look amazing on your skin.
Cool-toned guys fell for green: Test the waters with mint or emerald. Experiment with different colors and tones, to figure out what looks good on you.
Discovering the colors that look sensational on you is not about self-limitation but in everyone’s best interest.
So now that you have a pretty good idea of how colors work with your shade, it is time to shop right and look stunning in the best way possible.
